The Sunday edit Three pieces for the tennis trip I never pack forWhat I might bring if I gave myself a chance to play in Scottsdale. |
A note from Joshua I missed last Sunday. This week I’m heading back to Scottsdale for work. Indian School Park has the closest courts to where I’m staying, but I never pack to play: I don’t want another pair of shoes, a racquet is a pain to fly with, the hotel has no courts, and I don’t know anyone there. This trip has me wondering if I need a travel tennis shoe: a pair I could play in, then wear to an event later that day. Add clothes that earn their space in the suitcase, and I might be one step closer to showing up. |

The Park Tennis Take Vuori Kore Short Unlined 7Vuori makes this unlined seven-inch short for training and everyday wear, with stretch fabric and a drawcord waist. These are the shorts I’ve worn for years for tennis, runs, dog walks, and everything between. They’ve already earned space in a one-bag trip. They can handle the court and the rest of the day without asking me to pack a second outfit. They cannot produce a doubles partner, but I’m willing to let the shorts off the hook. View at Vuori |

Also worth bringing The shoe and polo that could pull double duty |
On THE ROGER Clubhouse Pro 2A multi-court tennis shoe with a clean enough look to possibly work at a sneaker-friendly event. This is the pair I’d try for the trip, not one I’m claiming to have played in. If it works with my work clothes and feels right on court, I can stop arguing with my suitcase about a second pair of shoes. Read the Park Tennis recommendation | JACQUES Natural Tennis PoloA tailored collar and quiet buttons make this a plausible work-event polo; raglan sleeves and an open-vent hem belong to its tennis side. I’d pack it for the possibility of a match, then put it back to work with trousers later. That’s a lot to ask of one shirt, but apparently that’s the assignment. View at JACQUES |

From the public court The match still needs a planIndian School Park lists drop-in doubles for people without a partner. I’d still need to confirm the schedule and requirements, and find a racquet in town. Three good pieces don’t book a match. They might make it easier to say yes to one. Bonus for the plane Racquet, Issue No. 29I just received Racquet No. 29, so that’s going in my carry-on. Its cover story begins at a moment I want to read about: after two years making RAFA, filmmaker Zach Heinzerling had to show Nadal the first cut. The tennis I’m most certain to get on this trip may be on paper. Read “My Time With Rafa” at Racquet |
