A note from Joshua
Crisp leaves. Crisp air. The smell from a fresh can of balls seems to last a little longer. Fall is settling over Chicago, and for a few weeks the city gets tennis weather exactly right. Mornings call for a cardigan or sweatshirt. Afternoons warm up. When the sun appears, it still has enough heat for one more set.
Yesterday at the first Armitage County Fair, Stand Magazines had a copy of OPEN Tennis Volume 4. Its handwritten tag read, “For tennis fans and everyone lining up for municipal courts.” If that is not a sign for Park Tennis, I do not know what is.

The Park Tennis Take
OPEN Tennis Volume 4
OPEN Volume 4 is a 136-page, 9.5-by-13-inch print issue featuring Eva Lys on the cover and stories spanning tennis, culture, photography, fashion, travel, and ideas.
The handwritten tag at Stand had it right. This is for people who think the wait for a municipal court is part of tennis, not time lost before it. Volume 4 is big enough to own the coffee table and curious enough to move from Eva Lys to Percival Everett without making the game feel smaller. Play in the morning. Order the coffee. Keep the rally going on paper.

Also worth bringing
Two more for the bag.

Marea Tennis Intarsia Shawl Cardigan
The court-fashion pendulum has finally swung toward my kind of weather: ivory cotton, green tennis intarsia, a generous shawl collar, and enough cardigan to carry a chilly morning all the way through coffee.

Otherland Matchpoint Candle
The fresh-can smell usually disappears before the warm-up ends, but Otherland built Matchpoint from tennis balls, cut grass, and cucumber so some version of it can follow you home for coffee and one more set.

One question before you go
What is your perfect fall post-tennis ritual?
Hit reply and tell me. Good recommendations have a habit of arriving from the next court over.

That’s enough gear for one Sunday. See you at the courts, Joshua
