Park Tennis Sunday · Issue 003

A note from Joshua

I went to Amelia Island this week with Andy Roddick in my head. I had watched him call the new Wilson Defyer 98 Pro V1 something close to a cheat code, then got to hit with Rob Lehner, head pro at Mouratoglou Tennis Center Amelia Island, to see how much of that hype survived a real court.

More than expected. My serve stayed in. I almost had a backhand. Am I Andy Roddick? No. But for an hour in Florida, the racquet made the question feel slightly less ridiculous.

The Defyer 98 Pro V1 pairs a 98-square-inch head with a 16-by-20 string pattern and weighs 10.8 ounces unstrung.

One session is not a full review, but the Defyer lived up to the mood set by Roddick’s video. I trusted it quickly, especially on serve, and the easier shape on my backhand was noticeable. It felt like a racquet that rewarded a committed swing without making every miss feel like a lesson. I want another hit.

A knowledgeable lesson with Rob included a Defyer demo, useful swing and clay advice, and enough flexibility to share the hour with my five-year-old son.

One question before you go

What is the one thing you always pack for a tennis trip?

Hit reply and tell me. Good recommendations have a habit of arriving from the next court over.

That’s enough gear for one Sunday.
