A note from Joshua

In New York this week, I made it to a few brand activations and the US Open. As a coffee nerd, the Yonex Coffee House was my favorite. It got better when the Park Tennis Racquet Selector paired me with the Espresso Brown EZONE 98. Sometimes the algorithm understands the assignment.

The Open crowd is changing, and some of it is annoying. Then you sit front row at an outer court and watch a pro catch the frame, float a junk ball, or switch to moonballs. Suddenly their game could be happening at a park in Queens. Or anywhere.

Yonex EZONE 98 in Espresso Brown

The eighth-generation EZONE 98 pairs a 98-square-inch head, 305-gram unstrung weight, and 16 × 19 string pattern with the Espresso Brown cosmetic.

A racquet that looks like it came with an espresso order is a strong pitch before you hit a ball. The better argument is that this 98 keeps the precision and full-swing shape of a player’s racquet while offering more help than my Pro Staff. That is why the selector sent me here. It understood the tennis question and, apparently, the coffee order. I still need to demo it. I already know which color.

SpenceTec Short 5.0 in Brown Plaid

Brown plaid, a five-inch inseam, and a court-first cut make these shorts look like they ordered an espresso before warm-up and made plans somewhere better after the match.

Bageled NYC Bagel Bud Corduroy Hat

A bagel hitting a tweener on brown corduroy is both the most New York answer to tennis headwear and the only sensible way to finish this outfit.

One question before you go

What piece of tennis gear won you over before you ever used it?

Hit reply and tell me. Good recommendations have a habit of arriving from the next court over.

That’s enough gear for one Sunday.
See you at the courts,
Joshua
